Deborah Caldwell-Stone, ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom’s Director says “We’re seeing an unprecedented volume of challenges . . . In my twenty years with ALA, I can’t recall a time when we had multiple challenges coming in on a daily basis.”

For those librarians across the country who are faced with these challenges and threats, financial support can be found with ALA’s LeRoy C. Merritt Fund. This fund, run solely on donations, supports librarians who are denied employment rights because of defense of intellectual freedom; that is, threatened with loss of employment or discharged because of their stand for the protection of intellectual freedom, including promotion of freedom of the press, freedom of speech, the freedom of librarians to select items for their collections from all the world’s written and recorded information, and defense of privacy rights.

Interested in supporting some of these dedicated librarians? Donations to the fund are welcome.
