Congress Increases Federal Funding for Libraries in FY 2026

On February 3, Congress passed spending bills that include an increase in federal funding for libraries in Fiscal Year (FY) 2026.

Less than a year ago, an executive order threatened to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the only federal agency dedicated to library funding. The White House also proposed eliminating library funding in the FY 2026 budget.

Thanks to advocacy efforts, IMLS remains in place, and library funding was preserved.

Congress approved a $1.4 million increase for library programs funded through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), bringing total LSTA funding to $212.5 million for FY 2026. Lawmakers also maintained level funding of $30 million for the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program, which supports school libraries.

Federal library funding supports technology access, workforce development, literacy programs, and services in rural and underserved communities. For many libraries, LSTA funding supports statewide initiatives and local programs that would not otherwise be possible.

When advocates show up for our libraries, Congress listens. Library supporters contacted elected officials, shared information, and made the case for continued investment.

If you participated in those efforts, thank you. You can continue to support federal library funding by sending a message of appreciation to your members of Congress and reinforcing the value of libraries in your community.
