Texans do not simply appreciate their public libraries. They rely on them.
A new statewide public opinion poll conducted by KRC Research on behalf of the Texas Library Association confirms what library workers, community leaders, families, students, and job seekers see every day: public libraries are essential to Texas communities.
The survey, funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, found overwhelming support for public libraries across the state. Ninety-five percent of Texans agree that public libraries play a vital role in providing free and equitable access to information, promoting literacy, and supporting workforce readiness. Ninety percent say libraries should be treated as an essential public service, placing them alongside other critical community infrastructure.
The results also show strong trust in library professionals. Ninety-two percent of Texans believe librarians should ensure library collections meet local informational, educational, and cultural needs, and 89% trust librarians’ ability to select materials that reflect community needs and interests.
Texans also continue to support broad access to information and ideas. Ninety-four percent agree that libraries should provide access to a wide range of information and perspectives, and 80% support offering materials even if some community members strongly disapprove.
At a time when public discourse has questioned the relevance of libraries and the role of librarians, Texans are sending a clear message: libraries matter, librarians are trusted, and access to information remains a shared value.
Public libraries are places where everyone is welcome. They help children build early literacy skills, support students and educators, connect job seekers with resources, provide technology access, and create spaces where communities can learn, gather, and grow. They are practical, local, and deeply rooted in the needs of the people they serve.
Libraries are not just buildings filled with books. They are engines of opportunity, connection, and civic life.
And in Texas, that support is unmistakable.
Public libraries are not just in Texas. They are Truly Texas.
Libraries are encouraged to share these findings with their communities. Downloadable graphics and social media posts are available to help spread the word about the strong public support for Texas libraries.
